Leadership Lessons from Young Digital Founders: How They Create Value and Impact in the Digital Econ



As CEO and founder of The Northridge Group, I am both an entrepreneur and a leader. Every day I am focused on helping business leaders solve critical problems as well as running my own company. Through management consulting, I have been exposed to a diverse range of organizations, functional groups, and cultures. Collectively, these experiences and people have contributed to the person and business leader I am today. Occasionally, peers and up-and-comers alike will ask me for my perspective on leadership. Today, I want to share a few of the greatest leadership lessons I have learned throughout my career.

Leadership Lessons from Young Digital Founders



One year ago, 200 Leaders hailing from 45 African countries convened in Johannesburg, South Africa, and were challenged to inspire, empower, and connect to create positive change in their communities. After the convening, they returned to their home countries to implement lessons learned and continue their leadership training through virtual bi-weekly webinars. Even in the wake of COVID-19 and an altered global landscape, each Leader persevered and remained true to the values that led them to the Obama Foundation. We celebrated their successes with a special graduation ceremony.


Obama Leaders in Burkina Faso and Mauritania are creating a culture of civic engagement and community action among young people across West Africa. Through a series of community focused projects, including leadership training in schools, community clean ups, and blood donations, Leaders are encouraging young people to embrace service and are teaching others how to advocate for and engage in positive social change.


The Youth Leadership Program is a workshop consisting of eight one- to two-hour sessions that enable those under the age of 18 to develop their communication and leadership skills through practical experience. Since that initial program True Star Foundation has grown to eight programs, providing over 500 Chicago youth with after-school and summer apprenticeship programs annually. The media produced has also grown from a newsletter into two quarterly magazines, a blog, a youtube channel, radio show and podcasts. In 2018, True Star ceased printing True Star Magazine and launched the digital platform truestar.life where youth create digital media content. But not only do youth create the media, they advise and execute business strategy, conduct market research, develop marketing campaigns, and are the ultimate decision makers of the brand and direction of the organization. True Star youth also develop digital content for external clients.


Executives around the world are out of touch with what it will take to win, and to lead, in the digital economy. Digitalization, upstart competitors, the need for breakneck speed and agility, and an increasingly diverse and demanding workforce require more from leaders than what most can offer.


Programming typically occurs once a week, from one to three hours, and contains founder-centric items such as leadership, company culture, how to pitch, equity, sales, fund raising and other items. The rest of the time fellows are building/selling but also doing it as a cohort; some fellows will be stronger in some areas than others and vice versa.


Kerrie Peraino is the Chief People Officer at Verily, where she oversees all People Operations activities, including talent and leadership development, talent acquisition, learning, compensation and benefits, diversity and inclusion and employee relations. Prior to Verily, Kerrie was VP, People Operations, at Google, where she led frontline HR and delivered world-class HR services to over 130,000 Google employees. Before Google, Kerrie spent more than 20 years at American Express in the U.S. and the U.K., where, among other HR roles of increasing responsibility, she served as Chief Diversity Officer, Chief Talent Officer, and Senior Vice President of Global Talent Management. She holds a BA in Communications from Rutgers University and an MA in Corporate Communications from Seton Hall University.


We are a young team of students, people interested in technology and innovation enthusiasts. Learning to Lead helps first-time managers understand the nature of the transition from being a great individual contributor to being a leader of others; it also develops their critical people skills and equips them with a whole new skillset that will lead to a smoother transition to leadership.


In collaboration with YPO, Goldman Sachs shapes a variety of unique and experiential opportunities for business leaders worldwide, pulling resources from various parts of the firm. The experiences focus on key areas including investing and market insights, estate and tax planning, philanthropy, capital sourcing, the evolving digital assets landscape, ESG investing and more.


Family businesses represent 33% of YPO global membership. The YPO-INSEAD Global Family Enterprise Academy is a ground-breaking program created exclusively for YPO family and generational businesses. The program offers a multi module approach targeting different regions and leveraging INSEAD multi campus facilities. This comprehensive program integrates learning from entrepreneurship, leadership, strategy, finance, governance and psychology. YPO members develop new insights about themselves, their family and their business to improve their leadership and power business growth.


While you might think you already need to be in a position of leadership to benefit from leadership training, individuals in a range of roles or career stages might find value in such a course. Below are four examples of the kind of professionals who tend to realize the most significant benefits.


Early- or mid-career professionals who are currently working as individual contributors or specialists within their department or organization stand to benefit from completing leadership training. This is especially true for anyone who has a desire to eventually move into a position of management or leadership, but is unsure of how to get there. By taking a leadership course and proactively developing your leadership skills, you're priming yourself to be ready when the opportunity arises to make a change.


To realize the benefits of promoting from within, companies need to provide a pathway for their employees to develop the skills necessary for success. Mr. Siebel is the founder of our company and has served as the Chairman of our board of directors since January 2009, and as our Chief Executive Officer since July 2011. Prior to founding our company, Mr. Siebel founded and served as the Chief Executive Officer of Siebel Systems, a global CRM software company, from 1993 until it merged with Oracle Corporation in January 2006. Mr. Siebel served in various leadership positions with Oracle Corporation from January 1984 to September 1990. Mr. Siebel currently serves as a member of the College of Engineering boards at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of California, Berkeley.
